Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised
At our school, we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics scheme to support early reading and writing development. This trusted and systematic approach helps children build strong foundations in phonics through engaging, well-structured lessons. By following Little Wandle, we ensure consistency and progression across all year groups, enabling every child to become a confident and fluent reader.
We read Big Cat Phonics Readers from Little Wandle as our home reading books, which are carefully chosen to match your child’s phonics knowledge and ability. We have phonics every day in Reception and Key Stage One, along with three reading practice sessions with an adult each week. Children also receive daily keep up sessions to ‘keep up’ with the phonics content to ensure that no children fall behind.

There are lots of ‘how to’ videos which are extremely useful on the Little Wandle website to watch to support you helping your child with their reading journey. We also offer phonics sessions with parents throughout the year so please look out for dates to sign up for a space and come along!
Phonics Screening Check
The Phonics Screening Check is a short assessment for children in Year 1, designed to check their ability to decode (read) words using phonics. It consists of 40 words, both real and made-up (nonsense) words, to assess how well children can blend sounds together. The check is a helpful tool for teachers to identify any children who may need extra support with their phonics skills, ensuring they are on track to become confident readers.
The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised scheme is carefully designed to prepare children for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. It provides daily, structured phonics lessons that build children’s knowledge of sounds and blending skills step by step. Regular practice with decodable books and ongoing assessment ensure that children are confident and ready to apply their phonics knowledge independently, giving them the best chance of success in the screening check.
